About Us

Link Associates is a unique community based non-profit organization that provides services for persons with mental retardation and their families.   Link believes strongly that every member of our community has equitable opportunities to participate fully in their community and neighborhood.  Link Associates serves over 1200 of our neighbors with mental disabilities and their families.  The services offered by Link support each individual’s full integration into the Greater Des Moines Community.

Every person served by Link Associates has the primary diagnosis of intellectual disabilities and frequently other mental and physical conditions as well.  Although other organizations serve people with mental retardation, Link Associates is the only organization providing a full range of services for persons from birth through the end of life.  When combined, these services meet the full spectrum of an individuals needs as well as the needs of their family.  Link Associates provides residential, vocational, in-home respite, leisure, day and pre-vocational, case management, transportation and representative payee services.

Like everyone, persons with intellectual disabilities attend school, go to work, participate in leisure opportunities, shop and reside all across the Greater Des Moines Community.  However, people with mental retardation and their families will tell you that they face exceptional challenges in maintaining services, especially when they become adults.  Adults with mental retardation are often overlooked and it is more difficult to appeal to public support when they physically change from children to adults.  As adults, they can become an invisible part of our community but with Link’s assistance they are supported in living a full and meaningful life.

Link Associates employs over 300 citizens who work side-by-side with consumers assisting each to achieve their personal goals.  Link’s employees are skilled and talented at looking beyond regulatory requirements to incorporate the quality elements of life and provide opportunities for consumers to be contributing members of the community and not merely recipients of services.  Link provides families with life long assurances of support of their loved one while working diligently to preserve family bonds while fostering personal independence and they are there to continue care as the parents of persons with mental disabilities reach the end of their lives.
